Surface Duo 2, Is it good for an education user?
First, let’s go through the specs.
Two-screens, pen, glass screens, Android 11, and of course Microsoft’s newest software. This thing is a beast.
OS Android 11
Chipset Qualcomm SM8350 Snapdragon 888 5G (5 nm)
CPU Octa-core (1x2.84 GHz Kryo 680 & 3x2.42 GHz Kryo 680 & 4x1.80 GHz Kryo 680)
GPU Adreno 660
Internal 128GB 8GB RAM UFS
With those specs, you can do whatever you want with this device. The price tag is pretty high $ 1,499.99. But with two screens etc. it’s totally worth it.
The Pen, oh my. I could easily say that it beats the Apple pen by far. I like it very much.
Battery life ? The battery itself is a 4,449 mAh battery.
And on my tests, it lasts up to 7 to 8 hours. An entire working day, but of course it depends what do you do with it.
Surface Duo 2 supports 23W charging speeds, but the selling box doesn't include a charger, just a USB-C cable.
What about the camera system?
12 MP, f/1.7, 27mm (wide), 1.4µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS
12 MP, f/2.4, 51mm (telephoto), 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS, 2x optical zoom
16 MP, f/2.2, 13mm (ultrawide), 1.0µm
TOF 3D, (depth)
Features Dual-LED dual-tone flash, HDR, panorama
Video 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/120/240fps, gyro-EIS, HDR
There are 3 different cameras, and the specs are pretty good as you can see. Yes, this is a phone, you don’t need to take magazine quality pictures with it.
I would say the specs are fully sufficient.
Selfie camera Single 12 MP, f/2.0, 24mm (wide), 1.0µm
Video 1080p@30fps
Sound Loudspeaker Yes, with stereo speakers
If you want to take selfies with your camera, go ahead. I propably won’t ever do that. Only for the Teams selfies. ;) And when the camera is Wide and 12 MP with F/2.0 I don’t need anything else.
When I was planning to buy this, I was thinking that I need to manage with this for a full day of work. And so far I am. With Microsoft software you can do it!
What can you do with this device ? Well, you can do so many things. Let me demonstrate a few.
In this picture, I am on a Teams, and as you can see, you can easily write on one screen and see the results on the other. (Sorry, most of my pics are in Finnish.) Like the old Nokia Communicator.
You can choose how you put your Apps on the screen. In this picture, Teams is on the right and left screen is free for apps.
Here we have Onenote on the left, and Teams on the right.
And here is Whiteboard on left, and Teams on right.
On this picture, we have a To Do app on the left, and Teams on the right.
Here are my Microsoft apps, which I use daily.
Camera specs are perfect for work use, the specs I already wrote about.
And as you can see, the latest picture is shown on the other screen, and you can even edit it. You can simultaneously take new pictures on the other screen.
If you want to use your screen on a stand, just turn it around as shown in picture above.
Teams for the meetings.
Onenote for the notes.
Whiteboard for collaboration with your class / workmates.
Edge for browsing, but if you prefer, use Chrome. ;)
Pen for drawing.
Your fingers for longer text.
To Do for your daily tasks.
The rest is up to you.
In my opinion, you should definetly buy this, if you have the chance. This is the perfect combo for you everyday Education tasks. I no longer need a tablet and a phone. I have a Surface Duo 2.
